Hello! Quick update on my life....
I swore in as a volunteer on Friday!! It was a lovely ceremony, and there were awesome appetizers afterwards. I was supposed to leave for post on Saturday, but I got sick and wasn't allowed to go (but I'm much better now). The only problem is that now there is a taxi strike going on country-wide, so I'm stuck in Porto with my host family for a few more days....I love them, but I am so ready to be in my own house! I'm just thankful that I can stay with them, as typical PC policy would be for me to stay in the med unit, which would be fine ifffff I didn't have a puppy(!!!)
Isn't she the cutest? Her name is Eleanor (Ellie for short). :) She is wonderful, but very much a baby. I love puppies, but they are such a handful. She's working hard towards being housetrained, but there is no good place for her to potty outside my house, so it's been a bit of a pain. Definitely one reason why I'll be excited to be in my own house.
One thing I have learned about having a puppy in Bénin (although I hope this only applies to Porto): If you thought people were annoying before, just wait. The Yovo Song pales in comparison to every third person calling at you to "donne-moi ton chien" and making the horrible kissy noise. Flocks of children chase you down the street. In contrast, though, some people/children run screaming in fear of your 9 week old chiot. It's like the normal reactions white people get, multiplied by five. I have learned that I do have limits to my nonconfrontational behavior - when people scare the crap out of my little puppy, I have zero problem telling them to cut it out and leave her alone. Woo.
I'm bored and I can't wait to get to post!
